Why We Give

The primary way we demonstrate trust and obedience to God with our resources is through giving. There are three reasons we give at Citizens Church.

Our generous God gave Himself so that we could be saved from sin, death, and hell. In 2 Corinthians, Paul urges the church to give by pointing to the generosity of Jesus, who traded the riches of heaven and became poor so that we might become rich.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9)

Obedience in giving is an opportunity to honor God and display His character. God doesn't need our money; He chooses to use giving to display His character in and through us.

“Take from among you a contribution to the LORD. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the LORD's contribution.” (Exodus 35:5)
“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” (Malachi 3:10)
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:7–8)
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.” (1 Timothy 6:17–19)

Scripture calls us to give and gives us parameters for how we should give. As we display the generous character of our God, we should see growth as we become more like Christ, and our giving should move from willful to sacrificial:

Willful: Making the decision to give
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Regular: Giving consistently and faithfully
“On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper.” (1 Corinthians 16:2)
Cheerful: Giving with joy, not obligation
“For God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Generous: Giving beyond what's comfortable
“You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:11)
Sacrificial: Giving that costs us something
“Truly, I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.” (Luke 21:3–4)

How Much Should I Give?

There is no prescribed "tithe" in the New Testament, but both Testaments call for generous giving. 10% is not required but is a great goal. The question is not "How much do I owe the church?" but rather "How much could I give to best display God's generosity?"
